A few weeks ago I ordered some parts from Rock Auto do do my wife’s brakes on her Cavalier. On Saturday I finally got around to doing it, and found that the brake shoes didn’t fit. They appear to be for a 10” drum, while the Cavalier has 9” drums. I’m trying to figure out who screwed up - was it me because I ordered the wrong parts or was it Rock Auto because they said those particular shoes would fit her make/model/year of Cavalier?
I can imagine that sending them back to Rock Auto won’t be cheap (shipping wise). What are the chances of selling them on Kijiji/Craigslist?
EDIT: Well, it looks like I’m out of luck. The estimated shipping to send them back (which won’t be refunded) is $16 and the cost to buy the brake shoes is < $10, so I’d be losing $6 if I were to send them back. Kind of crappy that I’ve basically got a brand new set of brake shoes that I’ll possibly end up tossing unless someone on Kijiji buys them.

if they screwed up they probably will cover shipping. i had to do that with some plumbing parts and they covered it.

I’d say your chances are nill that you can sell them on CL. It really can’t cost too much to send them back.

Just call rockauto. They’re pretty good about customer service. It’s possible that their suppliers had it listed wrong. They’ll take care of it for you.

Shipping to get the parts up here was more than half the cost of the parts. I’ll have to see if it is worth it to send them back.

I’ll definitely have to look into it. If they cover shipping, it’d be worth returning them, otherwise not.

It’s possible that different Cavalier models within the same year came with different size brakes. This isn’t uncommon.

Oh yeah it has to go through customs right?

I’ve returned incorrect parts to RockAuto. Shipping should be covered if it was their mistake. Usually if you have your make/model/year/trim correct when you ordered, they will take responsibility. Good luck!

The dishonest solution - but new pads at auto zone, use those on the car, put the rock auto pads in the AZ box, return, profit.

This is probably your best bet. If not I would just go get some at AutoValue or Napa. At least they would be easy to return.

Time to upgrade to bigger drums clearly

Find some 10” drums, because better braking. Or call Rock Auto and see if they can work with you on the shipping if it was possibly their fault. They might discount the shipping of the correct parts.
Or, eat the cost of returning them and do a disc conversion, because safety.

Well, it turns out her shoes were not as bad as I thought, so I left as is. I’ll probably give Rock Auto a call to see if they will cover at least part of the shipping. If not, I guess it really didn’t cost too much to begin with.

Hah! If anything, I’d upgrade to discs. I’m sure someone out there has done a disc conversion on the rear of a Cavalier.

Yeah, next time I might go that route, unless I’m getting something high-end. Part of the reason for going Rock Auto was the price. It ended up being around the same price, but for better branded stuff.

Yeah... not going to do that. I’d rather just eat the cost. My integrity is worth more than a pair of brake shoes.

As near as I can figure, the particular year/trim of Cavalier could come with either a 9” or a 10” drum. I’m going to try and get in contact with them to see if they’ll take them back.

Yup. At least they were made in US/Mexico, so no import duty on them.

As a few others have mentioned, it’s more likely that that particular trim of Cavalier could have come with one or the other size. Either way, I’ll try giving them a ring and sort things out.

Ya that is typically the problem with the parts places around here. There seems to be a big shift in price with a lot of them too. The ABS sensor in my truck was 71 at AutoValue, 99 at Napa, and 145 at Davis. Same part...

That’s crazy. Not surprised that the dealership had the highest markup, though. I really should do more shopping around when I’m getting parts. Usually I run to Auto Value as it’s the closest, but I really should check to Bumper to Bumper more often.

Sorry for the odd reply, but I figured it’d be easier than posting a new post for you. You planning on going to Granum for Canada Day?

No problem! I have to work in the morning and planned on heading to Waterton with some other friends in the afternoon. Sorry about that, the lady friend planned the day sort of!
Take lots of pictures if you go!

No worries.
I think they are still looking for volunteers for the Friday night cruise of Street Machine Weekend. If you, or anyone you know would want to volunteer, let me know and I’ll pass on the info. Basically, they need official looking people to stand by the barricades to make sure random people don’t drive onto the road during the cruise.

Tough for me to plan that far ahead, I know its not far off, but work kind of runs most of my time. I hope I can make it to the cruise at least. I’ll ask around today and make sure I’m off early enough on Friday.
